An 8-year-old was fatally shot following a auto crash in Houston, Texas, early Saturday morning.
Houston police said a vehicle that fled the scene is described only as a dark four-door sedan.
For unknown reasons, the driver that was racing or chasing the white auto got out of the vehicle and fired at least 5 to 7 shots at a black auto with a mother and daughter, hitting the 8-year-old girl. DeMaree Atkins was sleeping in the backseat of the auto her mother, Latoyia Thomas, was driving, after Thomas, 39, had gotten her hair braided at a new hair stylist's shop.
De'Maree Adkins, 8, died at the hospital.
"I looked over and thought she was trying to help", Thomas said of the gunwoman.More news: Raptors acquire PJ Tucker from Suns
Whomever was in the other vehicle ran off and another auto pulled up.
"I pulled her out of the vehicle..."
The grief-stricken mother said she'd do anything for more time with her daughter, who was an honor roll student at Houston ISD's MacGregor Elementary and who had just begun learning to play the violin. Thomas remembers asking her daughter after the accident.
"I called her name and I said, Are you OK?" She remembers seeing a woman step out of a auto and begin firing shots. She told her daughter to stay with her, but her little body just went limp. "I pulled her shirt up, and she got shot - the bullet went in the right and came out the left side", said the heartbroken parent. Wish I could polish her nails, her toenails.
Police continue looking for the drivers of the Pontiac and the sedan and say they are still trying to determine a motive. "We just don't know".
