Patrons at the Whelk Restaurant on Riverside Avenue told police they heard calls for help from a woman in the river just before 8 p.m.
The unidentified man was pulled from the river about 30 minutes later near the Bridge Street Bridge and taken to Norwalk Hospital, where he died.
Westport police say the man who died after his auto plunged into a CT river Saturday night is from Long Island. Farrell said the woman could not recall how she ended up in the river. Police identified him as 76-year-old Richard Lamendola of Syosset. A woman was pulled from the river and taken to a nearby hospital. The woman did tell police she was in a auto with a man. Farrell said moments later, they observed the male further up the river near the Bridge Street Bridge. She was hospitalized and there is no word on her current condition. Authorities say the auto appears to have gone into the river at a boat launch.
