SteamVR, formerly known as Lighthouse is a royalty free Valve position tracking technology, which now runs on HTC Vive and is expected to run on LG's new VR headset as well.
Valve who had earlier partnered with HTC to make HTC Vive, let the world know of this piece of information by mistake, when it let slip that the company was building a new VR headset using its SteamVR Technology. Pricing and details on the headset's specs are now unavailable but will be announced at a later time.More news: Bomb threats target Jewish centers, schools in several U.S. states
LG intends to spend its week at GDC 2017 talking with game developers to collect feedback. The company previously released its 360 VR headset for its LG G5 smartphone. Although the device delivered a more compact and lightweight mobile VR experience, it mostly generated negative reviews from critics and never really caught on with mass consumers. The incorporation of the OpenVR platform would mean that the LG VR headset would include SteamVR tracking.
With this new VR headset, it appears as though that LG is planning to take a different approach when it comes to virtual reality.
Neither HTC nor Valve have announced numbers for their HTC Vive headset. And, like we said, it will be based around the SteamVR system, which was opened to developers and manufacturers a year ago.
