Tony Romo to be released Thursday, ESPN sources say

In the meantime, what are you throughts about Tony getting released?

Adam Schefter, a reporter for the sports network, tweeted that sources told him that Romo will be released Thursday by the team. They can not do that until Thursday, which is why he is being officially released then and not today. They can save millions by doing this.

It isn't clear whether Romo will be released outright or designated as a post June 1 cut. At least not as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Either team could have the best defense in the league next season (Houston was No. 1 past year without J.J. Watt). That may not feel like all that much, but it's plenty for what the Cowboys want to do in free agency.

If he does decide to wait, he is at risk of making far less money and even having less interest.

That's why Romo is such a commodity, in spite of the fact that he has started just four games since 2014 and will turn 37 years old in April.

Plenty of other teams need quarterbacks, but Romo seems destined for just one of two locations.

Romo, 36, will then be able to sign with any team as a free agent, after the new league year begins at 1 p.m. PST.

Both of these teams are in the AFC, unlike the Dallas Cowboys, who are in the NFC.

Where is the best fit for the longtime Cowboys quarterback?

Joe Banner, also of ESPN and formerly the president of the Eagles with Andy Reid, replied, "Not that Romo isn't interested [it's] that KC isn't". It would be similar to what the Dallas Cowboys were planning to do with Dak Prescott.

The NFL media continues to talk about Tony Romo and the Kansas City Chiefs, despite every decision-maker on the Chiefs having already put their support behind Alex Smith for the 2017 season.

Romo won 78 games in his Cowboys career, but never advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs. His back and collarbone issues make him very high risk to the Broncos, or any prospective team.

That would place Romo on the open market in search of a starting job - and a victor for whom to play.

Romo, who suffered a broken bone in his back during a preseason game a year ago, is the Cowboys' franchise leader in yards (34,183) and touchdowns (248).
