President Pranab Mukherjee, as advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted Parrikar's resignation as Union Defence Minister, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament for the first time after the results of the recent assembly polls in five states, Rahul alleged: "They are saying that it is okay for them to misuse the office of the governor.In the two states (Goa and Manipur) where we won, democracy has been undermined by them (BJP) using financial power, money".

The BJP's tally stands at 14 as Independent candidate Govind Gawade, supported by the party, won in Priol seat.
Congress MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi told CNN News 18 news channel that had the party gone for "cardiac surgery" after the 2014 election, the situation would have been different and the BJP would have been on the back foot.
The bench found fault with the Congress for not raising the issue of number of MLAs supporting it before the Governor and also rushing to the apex court without the affidavits of members supporting the Congress.
Earlier, Goa Congress took all its newly-elected 17 MLAs to the Raj Bhavan and met Governor Mridula Sinha to seek an opportunity to prove majority in the Assembly but could not get any assurance from her.

Asked about suggestions that Gandhi was not the leader the Congress was looking for, Chaturvedi said: "I have to observe some constraints and restraints". In both states, the BJP is at an advantage because the governors are pliable and the power and pelf that go with being in power at the Centre helped the party in its efforts to form governments.
