South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl in the second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday.
Off spinner Dane Piedt has been drafted into South Africa's squad for next week's third and final Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.
To compensate for the loss of Taylor, who has been replaced by Neil Broom, and with Jeetan Patel preferred as the sole spinner, New Zealand have included all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme to prop up their batting stocks.
Not that he needed it, but New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was given a little bonus dollop of pressure from opposite Faf du Plessis today.
The hosts have also lost Ross Taylor with a calf injury. Tim Southee could get a look in the playing XI if Boult does not recover till the eve of the Test.
"I'll come in for Boulty, a straight swap for Trent who will unfortunately miss this one", Southee said, adding the balance of the side was still being debated despite the green wicket.More news: On visit with Steelers, Davon House signs with Packers
With the first Test a stalemate, Wellington is effectively the start of a two-Test series which du Plessis said heightened the need to get a result.
We're into the second Test between the Black Caps and South Africa!
"Obviously we couldn't get rid of Kane in the first Test and they were successful as a unit".
The Proteas have played six Tests at the Basin, winning four and drawing two. "There lies the secret".
