IN fired head coach Tom Crean on Thursday after nine seasons at the school, which immediately threw Alford's name in any future candidate search. After hearing their seeding and destination on Sunday night, they had a quick turnaround for a Tuesday night tip in Atlanta against a Georgia Tech team that was 15-4 in home games.
Crean's teams won two Big Ten titles in his nine years at IU.
Hunter is averaging 26.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season as he leads Tindley (22-5) into a Class A semistate at Richmond on Saturday against New Washington (20-9).
"The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep in the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship-and more after that", Glass said.
"To me, IU ties is a double check-plus", Glass said. But he never was able to launch IN back into the elite stratosphere with fellow basketball bluebloods like Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke and Kansas. He said IU needs to become more of a downhill team and one that can create off penetration. Most recently Crean missed on a loaded in-state class which included Kris Wilkes, Paul Scruggs, Jaren Jackson, and Malik Williams, all of which chose to leave the state to go to school.More news: Cal coach Martin resigns to take Missouri job
Rosenberg also spoke with John Harbaugh and Jack Harbaugh for the story on Crean, who had a 166-135 record and three Sweet 16 appearances in his nine seasons at Indiana.
Times had been rough for the Hoosiers in recent seasons, but Crean, who had been hired to rescue them from the toxic wreckage left in the wake of predecessor Kelvin Sampson, was hopeful he was the coach that would give this basketball-crazed state a championship and restore honor to Bloomington's once-proud program. If Crean gets a comparable job soon they may not have to pay him that much or at all. "Not even close. I'm not going to say IU hasn't tried to get me there and (Buckley) saw me at Manual for the Fort Wayne North game". If anyone wants to leave, IU will work with them.
IN now has a vacancy at its head coach position. He wants a proven victor, a proven recruiter who can tap into the fertile ground of high school basketball in IN and across the midwest.
"I love UCLA. I love Los Angeles", he said. IN fell apart and finished 18-16, including a home loss to Nebraska and a one-and-done showing in the NIT.
The Hoosiers plucked Crean away from Marquette before the 2008-09 season and hoped his knack for player development and track record of consistent success over nine years in the Big East would be the flawless antidote for a struggling program. The Indiana brass had seen enough. More important in that is that by and large in kids tend to stay close to home, and there is a general pull within the state to help keep kids within the borders.
