Netanyahu warns enemies at missile defense ceremony

Developed by state-owned Rafael Ltd. and its U.S. partner Raytheon Co., David's Sling is the newest layer of Israel's highly integrated and overlapping, four-layered network of active defenses aimed at intercepting short-range ballistic missiles and long-range rockets.

David's Sling is a medium-range interceptor, developed with United States backing, fills the gap between the longer-range Arrow missile defense system and the shorter-range Iron Dome interceptor.

Netanyahu also acknowledged and thanked the US administration for its support "At a time when budgets are tight, know that the government and people of Israel are grateful for the ongoing support by the United States".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday announced that the David's Sling missile defense system would be officially declared operational, completing the army's three-tier missile defense array. At the time, the project was known as Short-Range Ballistic Missile Defense (SRBMD) to distinguish it from the much heavier and longer-range threats that the US-Israel Arrow was created to intercept. -Gen. Zvika Haimovich, commander of the air force's Aerial Defense Division.

"There is no alternative to this system", Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said, adding the new missile defense system was essential for the country's security. "We are defending the home front".

Arrow was recently used to intercept an anti-aircraft rocket fired at Israeli fighter jets by Syria last month. Hezbollah's large weapons stockpile includes medium- and long-range missiles such as Iranian Fajr-5 missiles, M-600 rockets, Zelzal-2 missiles, short-range M75 rockets and Katyushas.

Along the southern borders, there have been several incidents of rockets being fired into Israeli territory from Gaza and the Sinai since the beginning of 2017. Hamas has issued multiple calls for revenge.

The system is equipped with the Stunner interceptor missile which have two targeting and guidance systems installed in its nose-tip (a radar and an electro-optical sensor).
