Djokovic shrugs off injury with Davis Cup victory

Spain captain Conchita Martinez believes her team still has the armoury to beat Serbia in the Davis Cup quarter-finals this weekend despite the absence of 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

"Spain is one of the most successful nations in the Davis Cup, " Djokovic said.

Nenad Zimonjic (R) and Viktor Troicki (L) of Serbia celebrate winning against Pablo Carreno Busta and Marc Lopez of Spain after their doubles match for the Tennis Davis Cup World Group quarter final between Serbia and Spain, in Belgrade, Serbia, 08 April 2017.

In Belgrade, Serb Novak Djokovic returned in style after an elbow injury, sweeping past Albert Ramos Vinolas of Spain 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on indoor hard courts.

In Paris, Lucas Pouille and Jeremy Chardy moved France to the verge of the Davis Cup semi-finals with straight sets wins against a British team missing injured world number one Andy Murray.

"Jordan (Thompson) played great yesterday, he deserved to win, he was the better player", said Sock.

Serbia has reached the semifinals for the first time in four years.

France hasn't won the Davis Cup in 16 years.

Sock must overcome Nick Kyrgios in the fourth rubber on Sunday if the United States are to avoid elimination. "I'm super proud of these guys today but it still will take a monstrous effort from us on day three", said Courier.

"I personally always draw very positive energy from these weeks", said Djokovic, whose career went into warp drive after helping Serbia win the 2010 Davis Cup title.

"I'm still very emotional out there".

Belgium was denied by Italy in Charleroi, where Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi defeated Ruben Bemelmans and Jons De Loore 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in almost four hours.

"Of course I wanted to be on court and defend my title but it just didn't happen this time", Djokovic told a news conference in the Serbian capital's Aleksandar Nikolic arena. "It's tough when you've worked really hard the whole week and you feel like you've let [the team] down a little bit".

With Murray also playing in fits and starts in the early stages of the season, Djokovic heaped praise on ageless Roger Federer after the Swiss maestro won the Miami Open following his Australian Open triumph in January.

France can wrap up the tie on Saturday when Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau face Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot in the doubles.
