Schwarber, Zobrist homer in Cubs' 7-4 win over Brewers

He broke through Friday with his first base hit of the season then collected three hits Saturday as the Chicago Cubs picked up a victory in Milwaukee.

It was a satisfying end to an 11-inning game for Milwaukee against the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

CHICAGO KEY TRENDS: The Cubs are 6-0 in Hendricks' last six road starts, are 5-1 in his last six starts against National League Central rivals and are 9-3 in his last 12 starts dating back to last season. Starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (1-0) got into the act as well, notching a pair of singles while striking out six over six innings of work in his first start of the year.

Aaron Altherr hit a two-run homer off Sammy Solis in the seventh to get the Phillies to 7-4 and Freddy Galvis hit a two-run shot off Blake Treinen in the ninth. "He said he was all right but I didn't feel good about it". Braun was scratched before game time Saturday with tightness in his lower back and has missed two of the Brewers' last three games.

"You're seeing some stuff in the outfield that tells you the grass isn't happy", joked manager Craig Counsell.

Nelson's balk in the 6th could have proven more costly because it advanced Zobrist to 2nd base, but he escaped the inning unscathed and avoided surrendering another run on a mistake. That cleared a roster spot for utility man Nick Franklin, who was claimed off waivers earlier in the week from Tampa.

Braun scored from third base on a wild pitch by reliever Mike Montgomery with one out, and the Brewers turned crucial double plays in the 10th and 11th innings to beat their NL Central rivals 2-1 on Friday night. "I don't think I gave up a hit after that".

Cubs second baseman Javy Baez exited the game in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Brewers after a collision with center fielder Jason Heyward on a shallow blooper in the outfield.

Arrieta locked in following Braun's homer.

Vince Velasquez (0-1) struck out 10, but allowed four runs in four innings.

Thanks to scheduling and weather delays during the Cubs' opening series in St. Louis last week Hendricks will be taking the mound on eight full days of rest since his last outing, when he pitched five scoreless innings in an exhibition at Houston.

Milwaukee will counter with Zach Davies, who'd like to bounce back after allowing six runs over 4 1/3 innings in his 2017 debut.
