Hinchcliffe gets 1st Indy win since near-fatal accident in 2015

Rossi would love to get his first road-course win in his home state.

Castroneves won the fifth season of the popular television show in 2007 but hasn't been victorious at Long Beach since 2001, as part of the Champ Car series.

The IndyCar Series will be in full swing this afternoon for the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, the 2015 Long Beach victor, topped this weekend's third IndyCar practice session at Long Beach, California, with a top lap time of 67.1348 seconds (105.531 miles per hour) around the 11-turn, 1.968-mile temporary street circuit.

The race vehicle driver was the runner up in season 23 of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars".

Hinchcliffe even noted that Long Beach winners get a walk-of-fame plaque.

Indeed, he ran a full season past year, then had a successful stint on "Dancing With the Stars" in which he raised his profile while finishing second on the show. Michael's father, Mario, won the first two races here in 1984 and 1985.

Restarting with three laps to go, Hinchcliffe then raced to victory. The team also added engineer Oliver Boisson, who was Bourdais' engineer at KVSH, which employed the racer for the past three years until the team folded after last season. He had a pole-winning run at the Indianapolis 500 previous year that cemented his return, but he still needed a victory.

In the immediate future, Castroneves, whose auto has a Chevy engine, is putting his full focus on the Grand Prix of Long Beach, a venue that brings one specific word to his mind. "It took me forever to get to victory lane there, but we managed to accomplish that a few years ago, and I hope we can return to that form again this year".

"Forty-three years (of) running, this place has a lot of history".

"Today is extra special because Long Beach is a great place", he said. "We got the pole at one (Indy), a podium at the other and now we win the third".

Sebastien Bourdais, who won the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., finished second.

Scott Dixon, who led for a race-high 32 laps, finished fourth.

Hinchcliffe was able to go one lap longer, coming in at the end of Lap 58 and made the overcut work perfectly to jump Hunter-Reay, giving him track position ahead of Dixon. "You never know. So that's what I like; they keep mixing it up, and that gives me an opportunity to be back in victory circle".

We'll take Dixon to rack up his second Grand Prix of Long Beach win, followed by Castroneves and either Hunter-Reay or Rossi as Andretti puts themselves back on the map. I felt like we were in a pretty good place to settle in. That's why this sport can be so rewarding and so cruel, there's nothing you can do. Pagenaud will likely finish up front, but Bourdais and James Hinchcliffe could surprise for Honda. "Since we know that Honda has a little bit of an advantage, Chevy is trying to push the limit".

"I was kind of thinking championship out there". Pole-man Helio Castroneves had a quiet race en route to ninth, while Graham Rahal rounded out the top 10 after picking up a posiiton following a late clash involving Mikhail Aleshin and JR Hildebrand. Graham Rahal told me this week he expects to see some 232 miles per hour laps. He hit the brake a lot earlier than I was expecting and I ended up running into the back of him.

Alexander Rossi says that he's encouraged by Andretti Autosport's off-season progress after qualifying a career-best fifth for Sunday's Verizon IndyCar Series race at Long Beach. He had the only Chevrolet in the final round of qualifying, and needed a track-record lap of 1 minute, 06.22 seconds to win the pole. After that, we were half decent. "Then we had a sensor issue and our day was done". I feel like we're back.
