Nearly five years ago, YouTube made its Partner Program available to anyone, essentially letting people create a channel and immediately start making money. Now, Google-owned video platform, YouTube has also restricted ads to those channels that are only having 10K or fewer lifetime views. It also comes two weeks after YouTube suffered big advertiser pull-outs after a rash of news reports about brands' commercials running next to objectionable videos, like those with racist language.
But according to the company, this new policy will give them "information to determine the validity of a channel", allowing them to monitor a creators commitment towards the platform's community guidelines and advertiser policies. Once a channel reaches that threshold (minimum 10,000 views on channel), YouTube will review it to see if the channel is following guidelines to begin making money.
Also headed to YouTube soon: A review process for new creators who apply to be in the YouTube Partner Program. The statement said the company would review the channel's activity against their policies and if everything looks good, then ads will be served on their videos.More news: Dan Rooney, Hall of Fame owner of Pittsburgh Steelers, dies at 84
The mass advertising blackout forced YouTube to vow a change of policy, allowing advertisers more control to filter out content where they don't want their ads to appear on.
YouTube is setting a total-views threshold for channels to make money off ads.
Once a channel reaches the magic number of views they can apply to be a part of the YPP at which point the firm will review the channel against its policies and bring the channel on-board if all appears in order. "We believe this new application process will help ensure creator revenue continues to grow and end up in the right hands", Bardin said. But since the launch of the Partner Program, YouTube has added to its size, growing an impressive 60 percent, on average, every year (since 2012). If everything checks out, YouTube will dish out ads so the creator can start generating revenue with future video views.
