"And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth", she said in her home at the time, where the Guinness World Records certificate declaring her to be the oldest person alive held pride of place on a marble-topped chest of drawers. "Her characteristic is that she always eats the same thing, every day, every week, every month and every year".
She clung to her independence, only taking on a full-time carer last year, though she has not left her small two-room apartment for 20 years, and has been bed-bound for the last year.
"She was slowly fading away", Dr Bava said.
Morano, born on November 29, 1899, was also believed to have been the last surviving person in the world who was born in the 1800s.
Emma Morano, like all of the world's oldest people, had her own beliefs and habits that she attributed to her unconventionally long life.
She's also 117 years old - although she was born in 1900. For more than 90 years of her life, following a diagnosis of anemia shortly after World War I, Morano ate multiple raw eggs per day.

After her first love died in World War I, a different man forced her into an abusive marriage. She was born shortly after the first petroleum-powered auto was produced by Karl Benz, and just a few years before the Wright Brothers defied gravity and took to the skies.
"I didn't want to be dominated by anyone", Morano told the New York Times when she was 115.
Nobody could argue against Morano's will as she spent her life being mostly single, and mostly happy. Though they separated in 1938, they remained married until he died in 1978.
Emma worked at the Maioni Industry jute factory until 1954, after which she moved on to work in the kitchens of a Marianist boarding school, the Collegio Santa Maria.
Some doctors had warned her against eating three eggs daily, which she did for years, but she ignored their advice.
The next oldest recorded living person, who now takes over the title as the oldest person in the world, is Violet Brown, a Jamaican woman.
