Srinagar By-Polls: 2% Voters Turned Up For Re-Polling, Counting Today

Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has won the Srinagar Lok Sabha bypoll beating PDP's Nazir Ahmed Khan by 10,776 votes.

He called for imposition of governor's rule and for a meeting of all the stakeholders in the state to evolve a consensus on the Kashmir dispute so that the suggestions could be placed before the Centre.

Addressing reporters after his win, Abdullah urged the BJP-led central government to dismiss the ruling BJP-PDP alliance.

The byelection in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on April 9 was marked by violence and apathy.

According to the data circulated by the official spokesman, out of the total 974 migrant votes polled, 952 votes were found valid.

Alarmed by the unprecedented violence, the Election Commission made a decision to defer the south Kashmir Anantnag Parliamentary seat by-poll to May 25.

The victory of Farooq Abdullah from Srinagar's Lok Sabha seat will rejuvenate the political career of the National Conference patron, who used every card from separatism to a soft pro-Pakistan line ahead of elections.

Soon after winning Srinagar by-poll, he blamed the current coalition government of having failed to provide a safe atmosphere for conduct of by-election, demanding that the by-election in Anantnag parliamentary constituency should be held under Governor's rule.

The polling day was also marred by violence which left eight persons dead and scores of others, including security personnel, injured in clashes with stone-pelting protesters.

Summary: "What do you say to the people who have voted, even if it may be seven per cent with all the pressures on them?" We have seen polls before also where hardly any percentage was there. Wars can't give any solution.
