California's Unemployment Rate Falls Below 5 Percent for First Time Since 2006

The employment prospects for African Americans showed little improvement in March, according to the Labor Department's most recent jobs report.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced Friday that New Mexico's nonfarm, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March was 6.7 percent for the second consecutive month.

The unemployment rate dropped 0.3 of a percentage point last month from February even as the number of people actively participating in the labor force went up by 10,500 to 2,933,300.

In March, the three industry sectors with the largest gains in employment were: Leisure and Hospitality (+4,200); Other Services (+1,300); and Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+900).

South Carolina's labor force also went up by almost 10,000, to more than 2.3 million.

MA added just 200 jobs in March and the state's unemployment rate increased two tenths of a percentage point to 3.6 percent from 3.4 percent.

Iowa's unemployment rate dropped slightly in March to 3.1 percent. Since March 2016, this sector has surged by 7,100 jobs or 1.8 percent. New Hampshire's was 2.8 percent, and Vermont's was 3 percent.

The national unemployment rate was 4.5 percent last month. Over the year, Construction has added 4,100 (+2.8%) jobs. State officials said an influx of workers in both states is keeping unemployment higher than the national average. The year-ago rate was 5 percent.

The Economic Analysis and Labor Force Estimates are prepared by the Employment Security division's labor market information specialists.

Good news for job seekers in Georgia. "When the labor force grows quicker than residents can find work, unemployment rates take a hit and that's exactly what we've seen over the past 12 months".

Counties with the lowest rates include Shelby (4.0), Elmore (4.4) and Cullman (4.5).
