Tesla recalls 53000 Model S, Model X electric cars for parking-brake issue

Tesla speculates that the problem may originate in a gear manufactured by Brembo, a third-party supplier. The shares were down 0.9 percent to $302.69 as of 1:56pm in NY trading.

"We are working with Tesla to ensure the issue is resolved quickly", a spokeswoman reportedly said.

Tesla is voluntarily recalling 53,000 of its Model S and Model X electric cars after a fault was found with one of the braking systems used in both vehicles.

The Palo Alto, Calif. -based company said it would alert affected customers of the recall via mail and email, which will inform them on how to replace the parking brakes.

While Tesla is gearing out to start the production of its first widely affordable electric auto, Model 3, from July this year, some really displeased Tesla vehicles owners have filed a complaint in the US District Court in San Jose, against the Elon Musk's unconventional automaker.

Of the 53,000 vehicles involved in the recall, Tesla expects less than 5% of those to be affected by the defective part.

If the gear were to break, the automaker said the parking brake could become stuck.

The recall covers about 63% of the roughly 84,000 vehicles Tesla manufactured in 2016. If your Tesla is on the list, expect an email in the next few days and then mail asking you to bring the vehicle in for the fix. The replacement process takes only 45 minutes, and assuming every potentially affected vehicle is brought in to Tesla, the recall process will be over by October 2017.

The Tesla recall is global and includes 53,000 vehicles. "We have also determined that only a very small percentage of gears in vehicles built during this period were manufactured properly", a statement on its website reads.

Following recent software update that was a part of Tesla's AP2.0 the vehicle started "behaving as if a drunk driver is at the wheel" when Autopilot is engaged, the suit said, citing a customer report. Although, company added that no reports of injury and accidents have been reported.

Last year, the company recalled 2,700 Model X vehicles after it learnt that the cars' third row seats could unlatch and fold over to the second row.

Following the announcement, Tesla fell by 1.7 percent in NY trading on Thursday.
