North Korea 'ready for nuclear attack'

North Korea displayed what appeared to be new long-range and submarine-based missiles on the 105th birth anniversary of its founding father, Kim Il-Sung, on Saturday, as a nuclear-powered USA aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region.

The North has said it has developed a missile that could strike the USA mainland, but officials say that ability may take more time for development.

The superpower warned the situation must be stopped from reaching an "irreversible and unmanageable stage" as a United States aircraft carrier group steams towards the region amid fears North Korea may conduct a sixth nuclear weapons test.

Choe Ryong-hae, a close aide to Kim, addressed the packed square and reiterated the warning to the United States.

Choe Ryong Hae said President Donald Trump was guilty of "creating a war situation" on the Korean Peninsula by dispatching USA forces to the region. A report emerged this week that Trump is ready to launch a preemptive strike against North Korea if officials believe Pyongyang is going to go through with a nuclear weapons test, although several outlets questioned the report.

As tensions heighten in the peninsula, China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, warned that confrontation between the USA and North Korea had escalated to such a point that "a military conflict may start at any moment".

"We don't hide that the strongholds of evil such as the USA army bases including those at Osan, Gunsan, and Pyeongtaek as well as the Blue House in South Korea can be razed within a few minutes", according to the statement carried by the KPA General Staff.

North Korea showed two new kinds of ICBM enclosed in canister launchers mounted on the back of transporter erector launcher trucks, or TELs.

USA president Donald Trump has sent a fleet of U.S. warships - including aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson - to the Korean peninsula amid fears the Hermit State may be about to detonate a nuclear weapon.

Kim Jong-Un often threatens the US, South Korea and Japan.

But NBC reports should officials became convinced that North Korea is about to follow through with a nuke test the United States will strike.

Along with goose-stepping soldiers and marching bands, some weapons analysts have said they believe new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) were among those on display - while acknowledging that the designs may be in their early stages.

He said that the North is also likely developing solid-fuel ICBMs, and that some of the rockets paraded inside canisters on Saturday might be prototypes.

North Korea has warned the USA not to take provocative action in the region, saying it is "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks", according to BBC News.

The reports surfaced while the biggest ever joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are still ongoing. It has warned of a nuclear attack on the United States in retaliation for any sign of aggression, a threat that has been made numerous times in the past.
