NASCAR fans react to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. retiring

This is Earnhardt's 18th full-time year in NASCAR Cup Series competition.

In the past year of his contract with the powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports, he will bow out from the top echelon at the end of the season. I knew the odds of me really having any talent at all and being able to do it were thin. We feel like we can go out there and do well.

Earnhardt Jr. thanked litany of people during his comments on Tuesday not in the least his father.

"You deserve everything, all the awards and accolades", Hendrick said. After looking at Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s stats, it's hard to believe that he's already retiring, leaving a spot for someone new to take over.

Earnhardt joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 after eight season driving for his late father's team, Dale Earnhardt Inc. Earnhardt also spent time reflecting on the loss of his dad, driver Dale Earnhardt Senior, who died in a crash at Daytona in 2001.

He will finish the season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series vehicle, and he still has two NASCAR XFINITY Series races on the books for 2018.

"She loves me through my good races and my bad races, but what makes her uniquely my own is she definitely is going to tell me when it was a bad race", Earnhardt said of his mother. As tough as it was for Earnhardt Jr.to return to the track this year, it was undoubtedly a tougher decision to leave it. Earnhardt said "I typically don't have a lot of fun on flat tracks, but it's a lot of fun, the win here, I remember that race, I don't know where Matt finished".

Earnhardt has been plagued by concussion problems in the past few years and missed half of last season because of it. "The opportunity to stand here at this point to announce my choice rather than some fate that was decided for me".

"I wanted to race, but I knew racing would put me in that shadow".

"Of course, in life we're not promised a vote, and that's especially true in racing".

Hendrick Motorsports says Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire at the end of this season.

Tony Stewart tweeted that he's proud of his "great friend" for "everything he's done for this sport".

"I realized how delicate things were and how quickly things can be taken from you". (Gordon filled in temporarily past year when Earnhardt was unable to race.) The AP writes that the high-profile departures leave "a major void in NASCAR star power".

Elliott Sadler works for Earnhardt's racing team.

"Dale Jr. has had a huge impact on our sport - and you can see that every week with his legion of fans and Junior Nation", Gordon said.

His time off in rehabilitation gave him time to consider his options.

"He's like a son and we've had many, many years of a tremendous relationship", Hendrick said.

The time outside the vehicle gave him a new perspective about the effects of brain injuries on athletes, and Earnhardt advocated for change in working with NASCAR to develop its concussion protocol. He has 26 career Cup victories and is a two-time champion of NASCAR's second-tier Xfinity series, where he plans to race twice next year.

Earnhardt turns 43 in October, is newly married and has said he wants to start a family. Of the current top drivers on the list from last year, only three will remain in the sport next season, with Johnson entering the final stretch of his illustrious career at 41 years old.
