Aaron Hernandez's Connecticut hometown prepares for funeral

Shortly after it was revealed that former National Football League pro Aaron Hernandez seemingly took his own life while behind bars, it was reported that he had a gay lover while locked up.

Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, who was engaged to Aaron Hernandez and is the mother of his daughter, is asking a MA judge to release copies of the three notes the former National Football League tight end left in his cell last week before he killed himself. The Patriots released him in 2013, after his arrest.

A legal expert told FOX Business that Hernandez's conviction for Lloyd's murder could soon be vacated due to a MA legal principle that can void sentences if a defendant dies before the appeal process is complete.

Earlier this month, Hernandez was found not guilty of murder in a 2012 drive-by shooting that killed two. A jury acquitted him on April 14. It is important for prison cells to be a place that inmates can be mentally stable. On top of that, they could owe Hernandez $2.5 million in base salary he was never paid following the arrest.

In addition to clearing Hernandez's name, the legal move, at the behest of his family including his girlfriend, Shayanna Jenkins Hernandez, could help protect his estate from liability in civil lawsuits filed by the survivors of his alleged victims.

Sullivan says Hernandez's family appreciates being able to say their final goodbyes in privacy.

Although Hernandez's death was officially ruled a suicide on Friday, Baez wasn't prepared to acknowledge that, as his investigation continues.

William Kennedy, a lawyer for the de Abreu and Furtado families, said he believes the families have a viable civil claim despite Hernandez's acquittal in criminal court.

He said Kennedy was open to the idea.

The lawyer who successfully defended the 27-year-old former athlete in the double-murder trial has vowed to conduct his own investigation into the circumstances of Hernandez's death at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts, west of Boston.

Courts in MA have held that when a defendant dies before having an appeal heard, the conviction is vacated. Hernandez's automatic appeal in the Lloyd case had not yet been heard by the Supreme Judicial Court. He says: "They love him and they miss him".
