Fox News addresses O'Reilly exit on air

"Full Frontal" host Samantha Bee gave Bill O'Reilly the red pen treatment Wednesday on Twitter, vigorously carving up the statement he released following his ouster from Fox News over a scandal involving multiple allegations of sexual harassment. He commented on the issue Wednesday, calling it "tremendously disheartening" and labeling the claims "completely unfounded", according to the Washington Post.

"But it is the unfortunate reality that man in the public eye must live with today", O'Reilly said.

For the past 15 years, he hosted the most-watched cable news program and served as the face of Fox News since the network's launch in 1996. I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to all my dedicated viewers.

A staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, O'Reilly has been an anchor at Fox News since he started at the network in 1996.

An investigative report published in the New York Times reported how Fox News and 21st Century Fox had allegedly remained on O'Reilly's side even as accusations of inappropriate behavior grew.

The move comes after Fox's parent company 21 Century Fox announced O'Reilly's departure in the wake of as many as six sexual harassment claims against the 67-year-old host.

The announcement came just hours after the combative and right-wing television personality was photographed shaking hands with Pope Francis in St Peters Square on holiday in Rome. He struggled to think of someone who could replace him and noted that O'Reilly is the third person to leave the network recently, following Ailes and reporter Megyn Kelly.

But after The New York Times report, advertisers including BMW of North America, Allstate Corp, French pharmaceuticals maker Sanofi SA and T Rowe Price, pulled their advertising from O'Reilly's primetime show.

Powers said that she then went to O'Reilly's executive producer and said, "He needs to apologize and he needs to never do that again, or I am not doing his show anymore".

After news of the settlements broke, The O'Reilly Factor lost more than half of its advertisers within a week, according to The Times.

Scores of companies yanked advertising from his show, the most popular in U.S. cable news watched on average by 3.98 million viewers in early 2017, according to Adweek.

As to what his departure means for the future of Fox News, Binning said he's not sure.

O'Reilly's access did not appear to come with any assistance from the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, and the head of the Vatican press office, Greg Burke, a former Fox correspondent, told RNS he did "not facilitate" O'Reilly's visit.

Kasowitz also said "irrefutable" evidence would soon reveal "that the smear campaign is being orchestrated by far -left organizations bent on destroying O'Reilly for political and financial reasons". "#OneBattleAmongMany #BackToWork." Mia Farrow added, "Fox firing Bill O'Reilly is huge and hopefully sends an effective signal to all guys, however powerful, who harass & maul women".

O'Reilly had been scheduled to return from his vacation next Monday, and there had been some talk of him addressing his longtime viewers about the exit.
