France Presidential Election 2017: Emmanuel Macron gets heckled by Le Pen supporters

The victory of Emmanuel Macron, who founded his political party only a year ago, will face ultra-right wing Marine Le Pen in the final run-off.

Some in the crowd shouted "President Marine!" and booed as the 39-year-old former banker arrived outside the Whirlpool appliance factory in the northern city of Amiens, where Le Pen had made an unannounced stop hours earlier.

Macron first sought a debate with Le Pen in February "which she refused". Two other French police officers were allegedly wounded during the attack before the attacker, reportedly inspired and affiliated with ISIS, was shot and killed by police.

Macron has broken with France's traditional left or right political leadership to run as an independent and promised to invest in public infrastructure and modernize France's workforce.

Ms Le Pen hopes to woo bewildered Fillon voters, many of whom share her tough stance on immigration, terror and law and order.

"It makes me a bit sad that Marine Le Pen got through", said a voter named Stephane, who preferred not to give his last name.

The two political outsiders each won over 20% of the popular vote in the first round of voting, besting their more established political rivals. Le Pen found strong support in the traditionally conservative northeast and along the coast around Nice.

"Hollande has asked ministers to fully commit themselves in the election campaign to ensure that Marine Le Pen has the lowest possible result", French presidential spokesman, Stephane Le Foll, said at the Council of Ministries on Wednesday.

Macron finished the first round of voting nearly one million votes ahead of Le Pen, which meant her odds of winning the French Election shot out from 5/2 to 6/1 overnight.

Her plans to restore France's borders with its European neighbours, pull out of the eurozone and hold a referendum on leaving the EU had sown fear of another devastating blow to the bloc after Britain's vote to leave.

With Mr Macron and his 'En Marche!' movement at risk of being in a minority in parliament, the centre-right party, The Republicans, hopes to secure enough National Assembly seats to demand a government role despite the defeat of its presidential contender Francois Fillon, eliminated in a first-round vote on April 23.

But Le Pen's share of the vote was far below a March poll high of 27 per cent and there was an air of disappointment in her camp that she missed out on the top spot.

"Tonight, I am no longer the president of the Front National".

She told France2: "I think that we are approaching the decisive moment, I have always considered that the President of the Republic is the President of all the French, and as such they must gather all the French".

"I will feel freer, I will be above the partisan considerations, it is an important act", Le Pen said.
