Uber is aiming for the skies with flying taxis by 2020

The company that changed the taxi industry for only a couple of years plans to deploy its first flying taxis (no, not a joke) by the end of the decade.

Uber Technologies Inc. plans to roll out flying cars with a pilot in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by 2020 and flights in Dubai at Expo2020, the company's chief product officer, Jeff Holden, said Tuesday.

Well, they'll most likely be vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or VTOLs.

Uber is not the only company that has announced a flying auto within the past couple months.

VTOL aircraft are electrically powered, meaning they produce no emissions - another indication that they may well be the future of the company.

Reports suggest Uber aims to begin testing the flying cars in Dallas by 2020 and is hoping to showcase an UberAIR vehicle at the World Expo in Dubai the same year.

Uber has faced a series of difficulties in recent months following several accusations of mismanagement and poor treatment of its driver, leading its CEO Travis Kalanick to admit that he "must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up".

When Elevate was first announced, Uber said that it's aerial taxi service would cut commute from city to city by a significant amount of time.

According to the BBC, the Uber Elevate Network - as it will be called - will run trials in these two cities before rolling them out to customers by 2023.

Uber is partnering up with Bell, Embraer, Aurora, Pipistrel and Mooney to accelerate its UberAIR fleet development.

The burden of meeting the target, however, is not on Uber, but rather on the manufacturing partners for the VTOL vehicles.

Mark Moore, director of engineering for Uber said: "Uber is taking a big step forward toward making the world's first VTOL network a reality and our partnership with Aurora Flight Sciences will help get us off the ground".

Although Uber won't play a role in building the VTOL aircrafts, it will design the UberAir app that will allow users to book a flight at a nearby landing pad.
