Clinton Blames Misogyny, FBI, Russia, Herself for 2016 Loss

Former U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday that sexism played a role in her loss to Donald Trump but FBI Director James Comey and intervention by Russian Federation were more decisive factors in her downfall.

She took questions from CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour in the event hosted by Women for Women International, an organization that works for equality and higher standards of living for women in war-torn countries around the world. "I was the person on the ballot", she said.

The panel consisting of Dana Bash, Brianna Keilar, Nia-Malika Henderson, Wolf Blitzer, and David Gregory expressed surprise at what Clinton said, calling it "remarkable" and an "incredible interview".

Saying she "absolutely" takes responsibility for her loss, Clinton placed blame on the FBI's Comey, who sent a letter to Congress days before the election saying he was reinstating an investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server while secretary of state, and on Russian intervention.

A new book out last month, Shattered, dug into Clinton's campaign and reached some pretty damning conclusions about her team's election efforts - many of which were flagged but ignored during the long journey to the polls. "I am now back to being an activist citizen and part of the resistance", she said.

The small group of aides who are still in regular contact with Clinton stress, though, that the recent uptick in Trump criticism does not mean the former secretary of state is on a comeback.

She added, "If the election had been on October 27, I would be your president".

Nate Silver calculated that the coverage decisions made by the media cost Clinton 3 points in the polls, "Clinton experienced a sharp, 3-point drop in her polls after the Comey letter came out. What a coincidence", she said.

Individuals with connections to the Russian government allegedly provided WikiLeaks with hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta as part of an operation to boost Trump, the Washington Post reported.

Although Clinton lost some states by very narrow margins (and easily won the popular vote) - which supports the idea of Russia/Comey tipping the balance - her team also took some states like Wisconsin and MI for granted and paid the price. She said she would stay active in public affairs. "Talking about Clinton's numerous attacks against Trump during the interview, Keilar laughed, "[She was] downright trolling him, I think!"

Clinton acknowledged that she made mistakes in the campaign: "Oh my gosh, yes".

"It's a painful process reliving the campaign as you might guess", she said.

Chalian went on to wonder if this supposedly "authentic" Clinton was indicating she was going to run for office again in the future.
