UNESCO Plans Anti-Israel Vote on Jewish State's 69th Independence Day

Some 66 percent of Arab Israelis said their country's situation was "good" or "very good", according to a survey released Sunday by the Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University.

5 - The resolution forbids Israel to carry out "excavations, tunneling, works and projects in East Jerusalem, particularly in and around the Old City of Jerusalem".

"There is no other people for whom Jerusalem is as holy and important as it is for the Jewish people", he said in a statement, accusing UNESCO of "denying that simple truth".

As it stood on Monday, Tuesday's resolution, unlike previous resolutions, does not refer to the Temple Mount only as Haram al-Sharif, or to the Western Wall Plaza only as al-Burak plaza, the respective sites' Muslim names. The draft resolution is also expected to condemn the work of the Israel Antiquities Authority in Jerusalem and call for the deployment of global observes to the city.

Netanyahu dismissed the resolution, which passed by 22 votes to 10, with 23 abstentions.

Jews maintained a historic presence in Jerusalem, including in the eastern sections, until they were forced to leave the Old City en masse in 1948. Israel considers Jerusalem its undivided capital but Palestinians seek east Jerusalem for the capital of a future state.

The UNESCO resolution said Israel had taken actions that have "altered, or purport to alter, the character and status of the Holy City".

The agency has frequently been used as a theater for political disputes between Israel and Arab nations.

The resolution, submitted by several Arab nations, has softer wording than another UNESCO decision a year ago that referred to several sites primarily by their Islamic names and largely ignored Jewish terms.

While Israel has long pressed nations to move their embassies to Jerusalem, which both the Israelis and Palestinians claim as their capital, nations have largely resisted taking the step out of fears it could undermine the peace process and lead to violence in the region.

The Palestinian "martyrs' fund" makes monthly payments to about 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in the long-running conflict with Israel, and says the money amounts to welfare payments to help victims of Israel's occupation.
