For The Deal-Making Trump, Compromise Seems To Be A Dirty Word

MANILA-Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said he called Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss North Korea "at the behest" of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Duterte's pushback against the United States past year further helped his image among Chinese leaders, analysts say. But Trump has been criticised for going beyond the phone call to Duterte and inviting him to the White House.

The two leaders also discussed tensions in North Korea, with Mr Xi reiterating China's call for restraint and dialogue.

"I had a talk with President Xi Jinping yesterday because he [Trump] called four days ago to ask me to call President Xi Jinping to do something about the situation regarding Kim Jong-un", Duterte said.

Duterte's chairman's statement after the summit highlighted improving relations between ASEAN countries and China, but sidestepped references to positions agreed in past meetings, such as on the "reclamation and militarization" in the South China Sea, where Beijing has built seven man-made islands and furnished them with defense equipment.

On Monday, Duterte said there will be "no winner" on the standoff between the U.S. and North Korea over Korean peninsula.

Spicer said it was because of Trump's effort that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are increasing their desire for peace.

Although Trump gave no timeframe for the invitation, Duterte on Monday told reporters he could not commit because he might be "tied up" with other overseas trips.

Mr Trump's gesture was widely condemned over concerns about human rights abuses in the Philippines carried out under Mr Duterte's auspices.

"President Trump has made it clear that we'll honor the agreement - that doesn't mean we admire the agreement", Pence said when he appeared with Turnbull in Sydney.

The bonds of friendship between the USA and Australia were reinforced during the Battle of the Coral Sea, when both countries' warships and fighter planes battled the Japanese from May 4-8, 1942, forcing the Japanese navy to retreat for the first time in World War II.

Some academics who study North Korea argue Kim could be looking for Russian Federation to ease any pain if China, which accounts for about 90 percent of North Korea's trade, steps up sanctions against the isolated country as part of moves to deter its nuclear and missile programs.
