On World Press Freedom Day, journalists are assailed on all fronts

Addressing the participants of the march, APNEC secretary general Ikram Bukhari and other speakers decried what they called a move by authorities to curb the freedom of press through administrative means. Free media and an independent, effective judiciary play a mutually reinforcing role as pillars of democracy.

Everyday we come across news of attacks on journalists.

During the question hour session of Lok Sabha past year, Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir said 142 attacks on journalists took place between 2014 and 2015.

Long live press freedom! The media advocacy organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) describes Iraq as "one of the world's most risky countries for journalists" where journalists are targeted by pro-government forces and the rebel groups, including the ISIS group.

On India, the organization said, "Journalists working for local media outlets are often the targets of violence by soldiers acting with the central government's tacit consent".

"If compared to last 10 to 15 years ago, the media situation in Cambodia is much bore better, while the competition is high, but the quality is also improved", he underlined.

"Journalists are increasingly the targets of online smear campaigns by the most radical nationalists, who vilify them and even threaten physical reprisals", the report goes on to say, and not to mention the sedition charges pressed on journalists.

The source reminds that Turkey ranked 163nd in the Freedom of Press 2017 report by Freedom House, included in the list of countries with restrictions on media. Katharine Child, a journalist for The Times newspaper, was bruised after being manhandled by a person who identified himself as a policeman at a religious event hosted by the Gupta family. In a country where we are free to express ourselves and our thoughts, we must remember that this fundamental human right isn't guaranteed to all.

This is positive news for the country on World Press Freedom Day, observed every May 3.

I call for an end to all measures of repression against journalists because a free press promotes peace and justice for all, he stressed.

This is a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to Press Freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.
