Swachh Survekshan 2017: Indore is cleanest city

Swachh Survekshan 2017: Indore is cleanest city

The government conducted the survey across 434 cities, saying it would help measure the progress of its Swachh Bharat Abhiyan programme.

Bhubaneswar: Among 400 odd cities, Bhubaneswar ranked 94 in the list of clean cities in the Swachh Survekshan-2017, the results of which were announced and awarded by Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu at New Delhi on Thursday.

The latest Swachh Bharat rankings reveal that two out of the five cleanest cities in India are from the South - Vishakhapatnam ranked third and Mysuru ranked fifth.

Bhopal, another city in MP, came at second spot, followed by Visakhapatnam (Vizag) and Surat.

Among the top 50 clean cities, Gujarat has maximum of 12 cities, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11 and Andhra Pradesh with eight.

Over 37 lakh citizens gave their feedback to the two-month-long survey, an official statement said.

The Heritage City of Mysuru has lost out to Indore in the prestigious "Cleanest City" in India ranking for 2016.

Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, improved its ranking from 418 in 2014 to 32 this year to become "the fastest big city mover in the north zone". Out of the 62 cities surveyed in UP, 41 featured in bottom 100. It has some of the dirtiest cities in India, the minister said, but he hoped that the state of affairs would improve because the new BJP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has taken over. Bihar has 19 out of 27 cities ranking beyond 300.

The minister said Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Kerala needed to substantially step up their efforts to improve sanitation standards in urban areas.

"Our objective is to show that where do they stand in cleanliness and what do they need to learn from others", he said.

Of the total score of 2,000, 900 marks were assigned for performance in respect of ODF and solid waste management, 600 marks for Citizen Feedback and 500 marks for Independent Observation.
