UP ATS arrests suspected ISI agent from Faizabad

The suspect, detained in Mumbai, is believed to have provided Ali with money for sharing information with the ISI.

Ali is being interrogated to know about others involved in the spy ring and to ascertain the identity of the Embassy staffer to whom he was supplying information.

"But, after Ali left India, he was replaced by another handler", Mishra said at a media briefing here.

"He (Aftab Ali) was in constant touch with Pakistan High Commission", the ATS said in a statement, according to ABP News. He went to Lahore via Wagah border and stayed in Karachi's Green Town. "Both have relatives in Pakistan, and it was through his relatives in that country that Naviwala came in contact with the ISI".

He said the army intelligence played a key role in busting the ISI activities. The Maharashtra ATS said they were scanning his phone records to get a clearer picture of his handlers.

Aftab was allegedly keeping a close vigil on the movement of troops in the area, especially between Faizabad and Lucknow, besides deployment of battalions, PTI quoted an ATS release as saying.

The two suspected ISI agents - Altaf Qureshi and Javed Iqbal - were arrested in a joint operation by the anti-terrorism squads of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Qureshi would deposit money in Aftab's Lucknow account to carry out espionage activities.

Arun added that the ATS was in possession of strong evidence against him and deposits made in Aftab's bank accounts will also be verified.

Javed was in constant touch with ISI officials in the neighbouring country, he said.

ATS officials seized a cellphone and Rs 71.57 lakh in cash from the house of Qureshi, who himself is suspected to be an operative of ISI, he said.

The ATS was continuously getting reports about military information being leaked to intelligence officials in the Pakistan High Commission and the ISI and the agency was working on it through electronic surveillance, ATS sources said. Aftab, son of Wajid Ali, is a resident of Khwaspura area of Faizabad, Arun said.

The Uttar Pradesh ATS swung into action after intelligence inputs warned of a possible terror attack in state by ISI men. He added that he got a call from Pakistan saying 'Dava-paani ke liye paise bhej do (send some pocket money)' to the alleged ISI agent Ali.
