Year later, charge dropped against Flint water official

I think they've run out of choices for blaming the Governor (also known as the only Republican in sight). "But how's that my fault?" A harrowing timeline of the Flint Water Crisis can be found here.

Thousands of people living in Flint, Michigan, could lose their homes because of unpaid water bills, even though the city's water system was plagued by unsafe levels of lead and its pipes are still being replaced.

Residents who have unpaid water bills for six months or more were served this notice with a warning: after May 19, the lengthy foreclosure process begins. According to NBC25 News, however, over 8,000 people could lose their homes if they don't pay their water bills in coming weeks.

"Flint residents should not have to pay for water they can not drink", he said then.

Why the sudden and widespread crackdown?

Nearly $3 million was brought in last month thanks to people paying their water bills in a city where 41.2% of residents are below the poverty line. And city officials are now desperately looking to residents to pick up the tab.

The tax liens that thousands of residents received last week were unexpected and resident's had no time to save or prepare for the notices.

If the residents don't pay, they may have to give up their homes.

If they don't fork up by May 19, their homes could get foreclosed on.

As of today, she still hasn't had the opportunity to meet with city officials.

"People are moving away, and a lot of people I talked to said they weren't paying it because we can't even drink the water", saidHuddleston.

"This is hard for residents, too", city spokeswoman Kristin Moore said. The process was suspended a year ago "due to the water relief credits provided by the state". Officials also gave people a 65% discount on their water use each month.

"While I understand this is the way the law reads, we are in a totally different situation", Mays said.

Those complaints preceded almost a year of mixed messages coming from city officials and studies of the water before a lead advisory was issued, and, later, the declaration of a state emergency by Governor Rick Snyder and former President Barack Obama.

The Flint water crisis isn't over: Residents of the MI city are still cautioned against drinking water from their taps without filtering it. But that very same government, which serves one of the nation's poorest cities, is still pumping dirty water through the tap after receiving close scrutiny for having dangerously high levels of lead in their drinking water.

The way the city sees it, they need to bring in revenue, so sending out these notices are necessary. That is almost $1 million more from the month prior when they only collected $2.1 million.

But for now, Flint needs its residents to pay up. "It is important that these customers address their unpaid balances".

The letters arrived just weeks after the city put an end to a program that helped 65 percent of resident's pay their water bills, even though Flint's water has yet to be declared safe to drink without a filter.
