Russia blocks instant messaging app WeChat

Other social media apps, including Blackberry Messenger, Imo and Line, have also run into similar restrictions in Russian Federation.

Russia's telecoms watchdog has blocked China's WeChat, the social media app developed by Tencent Holdings.

"We're experiencing a block and we're deeply sorry", a Tencent official said on a company microblog.

Russian telecom watchdog Roskomnadzor has listed WeChat service among the prohibited websites in Russia, Russia's news agency TASS reported Friday.

"Russian regulations say online service providers have to register with the government but WeChat doesn't have the same understanding (of the rules)", the official added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Roskomnadzor also blocked Messenger, Line and Vchat but did not provide details.

Last year, Russia blocked United States social networking site LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, for violating a law that requires data on Russian citizens to be stored on Russian servers.

According to a recent report from Slate, Russia is trying to imitate China's approach on internet control after the web fanned its largest anti-government protests in five years.

Meanwhile social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter are blocked in China, with President Xi Jinping a vocal advocate of so-called cyber sovereignty. It is produced by China's IT giant Tencent.

Sanctions are stipulated in Russia for "organizers of information distribution on the internet" for failure to comply with the Russian law on information, information technologies and information security.
