ACLU warns Texas travellers about 'sanctuary city' law

Greg Abbott signed SB4 into law on Sunday, which allows law enforcement officials during routine stops to ask any individual whether or not they are in the country legally or not. It also permits police to inquire about the legal status of those they encounter during their regular duties. It also punishes law enforcement leaders who don't fully comply with federal immigration law.

The Texas and Arizona bills are not identical. Audrey McGlinchy with member station KUT in Austin has more.

Abbott addressed the possible challenges in his five-minute Facebook Live signing, saying the provisions in the bill have been tested at the U.S. Supreme Court and approved.

San Antonio is the first city to abandon its sanctuary city policy as a result of SB4 being signed. "Elected officials and law enforcement agencies, they don't get to pick and choose which laws they will obey".

One thing the sheriff very much wants to drive home is that undocumented immigrants should not be afraid to call 911.

On Monday, people rallied against the measure at the Governor's mansion. "And we have a zero tolerance policy on racial profiling". Ken Zarifis, who heads a local public teacher's union, ditched the bull horn that others needed to use.

"I think what this bill brings with it is the perception that Texas's welcome mat comes with qualifiers", said Cathy Stoebner DeWitt, vice president of governmental affairs for the Texas Association of Business. I don't think so.

"Every major police chief in Texas, which includes some of the largest cities in the USA, opposed the measure that allows police to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they detain, a situation that can range from arrest for a crime to being stopped for a traffic violation".

Witnesses and crime victims are exempt from being asked about immigration status.

"Our immigrant communities need to know that we stand with you; we will fight this assault in the courts, at the ballot box, and in the streets if we have to", Burke wrote. Here's Austin Police Chief Brian Manley speaking last month.

"Citizens expect law enforcement officers to enforce the law", Abbott said.

MCGLINCHY: Legal maneuvering over the bill has already started. Paxton filed the suit under the federal Declaratory Judgment Act "so that the constitutionality of SB 4 may be resolved throughout Texas in a single court".
