Dick Advocaat appointed as Holland's new manager, will be country's oldest coach

Fenerbahce boss Dick Advocaat has been unveiled as the Dutch national team's manager for a third time.

Advocaat's predecessor, Blind, was sacked in March after failing to guide the Oranje to Euro 2016 and overseeing a hard start to their World Cup qualifying campaign having suffered two defeats in their opening five games.

Advocaat, who turns 70 in September, will become the country's oldest national team coach and will be assisted by Ruud Gullit as they look to revive Netherlands' fortunes.

Gullit, a former Chelsea coach, captained the Netherlands to its only major tournament success, the 1988 European Championship.

The Dutch soccer association has announcement Tuesday May 9, 2017, that Dick Advocaat will be appointed for his third stint in charge of the national team. "We had two options".

He has been appointed until the end of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign and his deal will be extended should Netherlands reach Russian Federation. 'We chose the second scenario. We needed an experienced coach with authority. According to local media Louis van Gaal, Ronald Koeman, Frank de Boer, Henk ten Cate and German coach Roger Schmidt all turned the job down.

"I've never been to Ten Cate and said he would be coach". I was still in talks with two candidates. He knew I was still talking with Dick as well.

More news: Hanford collapse larger than first believed

"The moment Fred Rutten dropped out of contention as assistant, it was clear that Henk ten Cate would not be (head coach)".

"I think it's very rude of him to let someone listen to me in a conversation without telling me".

Advocaat, 69, previously managed Oranje between 1994-96 and 2002-04 as well as assisting his country for a further three spells, the most recent of which was a year ago.

"Advocaat does not have a clause in his contract this time", added van Breukelen.

In the end, Advocaat was chosen despite having sparked anger among players and federation officials when he walked away from his role as Blind's assistant past year to join Fenerbahce. You have to ignore your emotions and go for quality.

Advocaat stepped down as manager of Turkish outfit Fenerbahce to take the job, which he also held from 1992 to 1994, and 2002 to 2004.
