Google's new Fuchsia OS gets a video preview

Fuchsia, the mysterious new operating system under development at Google.has acquired a user interface.

The company's reports explain that the Magenta-based software is created for the most advanced smartphones and gadgets that have enough RAM for open-ended operation.

First discovered by Kyle Bradshaw at Hotfix, the user interface is called Armadillo and is said to serve as "the default system UI for Fuchsia". Hotfixit.net has recently spotted the Fuchsia System UI, which is called Armadillo, according to Ars Technica.

Tapping on the User profile brings up a few toggles for Volume, Airplane Mode, Auto-rotate, etc. As discussed briefly yesterday, Fuchsia is the codename for the OS, while Armadillo is essentially the 1.0 name, not unlike Google's dessert names for Android releases. It also mentioned that the updated beta version of Android Nougat is going to be available to the public soon. If we want to get down into the guts, that is to say. Apparently, Fuchsia is more than a hobby for Google, and the operating system represents a major endeavor for the company.

You can also long press a card and drag it around the screen. Google Search is also present along with other familiar apps like e-mail and phone.

It also has a Vulkan-based graphics renderer called "Escher" that lists "Volumetric soft shadows" as one of its features, which seems custom-built to run Google's shadow-heavy "Material Design" interface guidelines.

There is no information on what the "O" stands for, but Google had posted details about the new features of its all-new operating system. The platform was developed using Google's Flutter SDK, which is a mix of different qualities of different OSes put together. We first heard about this OS in August a year ago, and it finally has a preview for all of us to see.

The new screenshots show a vertically-scrolling interface laden with app-based cards, known as stories, which can be placed anywhere on a smartphone or tablet touchscreen. It is a place for your recent apps with the ability to act as a double launcher too - like a Desktop OS you can combine more than two apps in a split-screen mode. You'll even find a rudimentary hand-drawn Armadillo logo, which nearly certainly will not show up in the finished product.

So where might we see Fuchsia pop up? Still, whatever Fuchsia OS is, we're getting an early glimpse at it.
