Niece of France's Le Pen quits politics for now

"The National Front. must deeply renew itself in order to rise to the historic opportunity and meet the French people's expectations", Le Pen said in a brief address to her supporters shortly after the first projections of the presidential elections' results were released.

Marechal-Le Pen, who was pushing for a harder party line than her aunt on immigration and national identity, isn't closing the door on a return to politics.

Ms Marechal-Le Pen has already informed Ms Le Pen, who has said she respects her niece's choice.

During the presidential election campaign, 48-year-old Marine Le Pen had tried to extend her party's appeal to a wider base and had stepped down as party leader.

She went on to say that her result in the presidential elections is historic, despite the defeat, and added that her party would become the main opposition force to Macron.

She said her relative's decision to soften her stance on seeking to quit the euro had come too late for voters concerned about that part of her programme.

Her decision follows the huge loss by her aunt, Marine Le Pen, at the French presidential election on Sunday where the anti-EU candidate won just 33.9 per cent of the vote.

In a letter to the Le Dauphine Libere newspaper, she said: "You know my story, you know I've been in this political world all my life".

This will create a great disappointment.

At the same time, she also said that she was immediately beginning a new election campaign for the parliamentary elections scheduled for the next few months.
