Police officer who shot and killed Texas teen is fired

While police initially said the auto was driving "aggressively towards the officer", prompting the shot, Haber recanted that account Monday after viewing officer body camera video that authorities said showed that the vehicle was driving away from the officers.

Roy Oliver fired his rifle into a auto of unarmed teens Saturday night as they drove away, fatally striking Jordan Edwards in the head. "I acted on them", Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber told press yesterday (May 2).

Officer Roy Oliver violated several unspecified department policies in the killing of Jordan Edwards, officials said.

Police originally said the vehicle was reversing "in an aggressive manner" toward officers, but later said that body-camera video taken at the scene proved the vehicle was actually driving away.

"We do not support nor do we condone any violence or threats made against the Balch Springs Police Department or any other law enforcement agencies", Edwards' family said in a statement.

In a statement on Tuesday, Edwards's family said that they were "grateful the decision has been made to terminate the officer responsible for Jordan's murder" but that there "remains a long road ahead". The Dallas County medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.

Edwards' parents want the as-yet-unnamed officer who fired the shots to be arrested, said their attorney Lee Merritt.

Sheriff Lupe Valdez and District Attorney Faith Johnson are conducting separate investigations into the murder.

The Edwards family's attorneys claim witnesses said Jordan and the four people with him chose to leave the party as it started to become unruly, with the sounds of gunfire and police arriving. "What we desire only second to having our beloved Jordan back is JUSTICE FOR JORDAN".

"Balch Springs PD called the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and asked if they could restrain Jordan's father because of his hostile behavior", Merritt said, according to the newspaper.

As they drove away from the party, Crockett said, the brother driving the vehicle heard multiple gunshots that were close enough to leave his ears ringing. It took the people in the vehicle a few moments to realise Jordan was slumped over. Merritt called on investigators to pursue criminal charges. They couldn't tell if he was already dead.

Oliver's attorney has declined to comment publicly on Edwards' death and an investigation of Oliver's actions.

Jordan Edwards' family's attorney, Lee Merritt, released the statement on his Twitter account, also asking people to follow the family's wishes to not protest, march or threaten officers.

Jordan Edwards, a black high school student described by family and friends as a stand-out student and athlete, was struck by a bullet to the head and died. And he was a social butterfly who was the one who wanted to go to the party, she said. They confronted the vehicle Edwards was in.

A vigil was held at the school on Monday evening, and the school district said they are "mourning this bad loss". He also added that the video of the incident raises questions about whether the shooting was necessary, saying he doesn't believe it "met our core values", The Washington Post reported.

"On behalf of the entire Balch Springs Police Department and the city of Balch Springs we express our honest condolences with the family", Haber said.
