North Korea accuses US, South Korea of assassination attempt

KCNA said the two intelligence services "ideologically corrupted" and bribed a North Korean surnamed Kim and turned him into "a terrorist full of repugnance and revenge against the supreme leadership of the DPRK".

Though Chinese analysts recognize the dangers posed by the North, they have long seen Chinese influence as limited and believe that US hostility toward North Korea is the root cause of peninsular tensions, Snyder said.

Pyongyang accuses US and South Korea spy agencies of attempt to assassinate country's leader with biochemical weapons. To discuss, Worldview talks with Peter Hayes, director of the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability in Berkeley, California.

The North Korean statement did not provide details about how it allegedly broke up the assassination plot or if anyone else involved was in custody.

"The Trump administration ultimately expects Beijing to put enough pressure on Pyongyang to make Kim realize that the nuclear program endangers rather than assures the survival of his regime", Snyder said.

A North Korean referred to only as "Kim" was paid to carry out an attack with biochemical substances, the ministry of state security said.

The statement from North Korea's Ministry of State Security released Friday said the USA intelligence agency had bribed a North Korean citizen, named only as Kim, in 2014 to carry out the plot.

The possible locations for the killing included events at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a military parade, or a public procession after Kim Jong-Un return home, according to the statement.

"Korean-style anti-terrorist attack will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the US imperialists and the puppet clique", the statement says.

In Washington, the CIA declined to comment, and officials at South Korea's National Intelligence Service did not answer repeated phone calls.

It said "Kim" had been told that the best method was the use of "biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance" whose results would "appear after six or 12 months".

They allegedly smeared the man's face with the toxic VX nerve agent, a chemical described by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction, at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13.

With President Trump promising to stop North Korea developing nuclear weapons, these are also tense times, when Pyongyang could have been tempted to hit back at the US.

The US has sent a warship to the region and installed a controversial anti-missile defence system in South Korea.
