Trump on Israeli-Palestinian peace: 'We will get it done'

President Trump hosted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the White House on Wednesday, and promised to do "whatever is necessary" to help reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.

"We want to create peace between Israel and the Palestinians", Trump said during a joint statement with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

For his part, Abbas said that the strategic choice for the Palestinians is to achieve peace based on a two-state solution based along the 1967 borders, stressing that he looks forward to working with Trump to complete the historic deal.

Trump said it was "a great honor" to welcome Abbas before the two began a brief Oval Office meeting.

"Whenever there is a vacuum, the worst forces fill it", Ross said during a talk at the Washington Institute, a research center dedicated to Middle East policy. And we, Mr. President, inshallah, God willing, we are coming into a new opportunity, a new horizon. "We believe that it is possible to reach a solution".

Trump's pro-Israel rhetoric during the 2016 election campaign raised concern among Palestinians about whether their leaders will get a fair hearing.

Palestinian officials say it will be hard for Abbas to return to the negotiating table without a long-standing pre-condition of a freeze on Jewish settlement expansion on land Israel occupied in 1967, which Palestinians want for a state.

Abbas also said that ISIS must be defeated for safety and security for the region, and mentioned the importance of the Arab peace initiative that was first proposed by Saudi Arabia in 2002.

The Palestinian leader said he hoped to "resolve the problem of refugees and prisoners" with regards to worldwide law in whatever agreement may be signed.

Israelis and Palestinians have been at odds since Israel was established in 1948. "How can you talk about peace and fund terrorism?" he said, calling on his Palestinian counterpart to "fund peace, not murder" and cancel payments to families of Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails. "I would love to be a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator, and we will get this done".

The White House also said Trump is still considering moving the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but nothing has been decided. The deal would not just be about a peaceful, two-state solution, but also about solving the issue of refugees and prisoners "according to global law".

Abbas added that the Palestinians recognise the State of Israel, and the time has come for Israel to end its occupation of the Palestinian people and their land, adding that all final status issues are resolved, including refugees and prisoners in accordance with global law.

With the global focus on Syria's bloody civil war and the threat posed by Islamic State, Palestinian officials have been keen to raise their cause up the White House agenda.

"Let's see if we can find the solution", Trump continued.

He denounced Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories even as he expressed optimism about the stalled peace effort.

"There can be no lasting peace unless the Palestinian leaders speak in a unified voice against incitement to violate, and violence, and hate", the president said.

Successive presidents have declined to do so despite having congressional authorization under the Jerusalem Embassy Act, warning that the move could endanger USA security and potentially upend peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
