Instagram Copies Snapchat Once Again, Introduces AR Face Filters & More

Now Instagram is replicating the 3D filters that Snapchat made popular with the addition of its own face filters on Tuesday. You can get to the filters from the face icon in the right corner of the Instagram app when you're filming a story.

The augmented reality face filters will work with both front and the back camera. The company is also adding a new rewind feature to Boomerang and hashtags to stories along with the new Face Filters. All of these exciting features are part of v10.21 for Android and iOS. Then, using the eraser brush, you can creatively reveal parts of your photo or video underneath. To use it, you'll find "Rewind" next to "Boomerang" and "Hands-Free" in the camera tool. In other words, Instagram is making the case that its face filters are more realistic and life-like than Snapchat's selfie lenses. Within your image or video, you can add a hashtag sticker to your story allowing more than just your Instagram following to see your clever face-filter ideas. Friends viewing the story can tap the hashtag sticker or text and visit the hashtag page. If it still doesn't appear, you may just have to wait, as Instagram says the feature will roll out globally in the coming weeks. There's also a new drawing tool called the eraser brush. You can erase other things you've drawn and play around with removing color.

Snapchat is focused on its 166 million users and their deep engagement with the app, spending on average more than 30 minutes there. Earlier this year, Instagram additionally added the option to like and reply to individual comments. First, you take a picture or video. Previously, it was an "all-or-nothing" approach, but Stories lets you handpick who you share posts with, and importantly who you choose not to. Snapchat's typically make your face dewy and even a little thinner-all to make you look like a more appealing human being.
