Daredevil teens climb 745-foot Golden Gate Bridge without safety gear

Daredevil teens climb 745-foot Golden Gate Bridge without safety gear

"I don't want to say too much about how we got past security".

YouTube is full of videos of risk takers performing unsafe stunts, each more mindless than the previous. "Guys, we've just made it to the top", says one of the teens in the video, adding, "It's so attractive up here". "Where these individuals were and what they were engaged in could not have harmed the bridge, so it did not trigger alarms".

"The Golden Gate Bridge is like the most famous bridge in the world-it's an iconic landmark and it's one of the tallest bridges of its type", Peter Teatime told CBS13 via Skype, "so we figured we'd give it a shot because I haven't seen that many people do it and we kind of wanted to be like the first and yeah-we just went for it".

Teatime, who describes himself as being a "really curious person", said he has been climbing buildings all over the globe for several years.

The men - identified by the LA Times as Peter Teatime and Tommy Rector - apparently began their climb from the west sidewalk, which is generally used for cyclists and maintenance vehicles.

"The reckless behavior of the individuals who performed this stunt does not distract from this fact", Clemens said.

Golden Gate Bridge officials said the climbers could have posed a danger to motorists if one of them had fallen. At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District General Manager Dennis Mulligan had stern words for the duo.

However, the act of the thrill-seekers revealed to the authorities that the multi-million dollar security system of Golden Gate Bridge has some gaps.

The bridge was not damaged or harmed by the climbers, he said. As SFist points out, "Trespassing on any not-publicly-accessible part of any bridge in the state of California comes with a possible fine of $10,000 and up to a year in county jail, following a law that was passed back in 1997".

The bridge district did not know about the climb when it happened, and changes are underway in the "security infrastructure" and monitoring of the cameras and patrolling on the bridge, Clemens said.

"Climbing the bridge wasn't even the highest thing I have climbed - but it was definitely the coolest", he confessed.

"We weren't doing anything wrong", he said.
