To Many Americans, Memorial Day Has Lost its Meaning

People may gather with friends or use the day to kick off summer. The two wars on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean resulted in more than 1 million American casualties, deaths and injuries combined.

It wasn't until America's entry into World War One that the tradition was expanded to include those killed in all wars.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, honors the contributions of American workers, not the military. The law took effect in 1971 at the federal level. Every day, but especially today, we remember those who paid the ultimate price for that freedom with their lives. Most notable among them was Waterloo, New York - which was designated by then-president Lyndon Johnson and the U.S. Congress as the "birthplace of Memorial Day" on the centennial observance of its inaugural event back in 1866. Inouye died in 2012.

Memorial Day is about remembering those who died for our freedom. The town first celebrated on May 5, 1866. The Treasure Valley Young Marines spent much of May 27 decorating graves at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery and later today, a formal ceremony involving all branches of the armed services will be held at the cemetery, beginning at 10 a.m.

On Veterans Day, old timers and Brits wear poppies.

The American Legion Post 18 in Bloomington honors Memorial Day each year at Rose Hill Cemetery.
