Special Session: Gov. Mum On Major Issues

Special Session: Gov. Mum On Major Issues

Almost month after they went home following the conclusion of the 2017 Legislative session, members of both the Florida House and Senate will be returning to Tallahassee for a three day special session. The three day session will start Wednesday June 7th and conclude on Friday June 9th.

Scott also issued $410 million in line item vetoes, zeroing out scores of budget earmarks for community projects. But the fact that the Republican leaders of both chambers have reached a deal - after Corcoran staunchly opposed increasing Visit Florida's budget or even keeping it at the current level - is a strong indication of how the legislators might vote.

"It may be a step forward, if we get the funding - but then a bigger step backward" if HB 7069 is signed into law, Hillsborough County schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins said.

A number of educational initiatives, from $1 million for Florida Gulf Coast University's academic and career attainment program to $1.05 million for Florida Atlantic University's Max Planck Scientific Fellowship Program, were removed from the budget as Scott said the schools could cover the costs through their state allocations. "The students and the state win, the people who want a better paying job wins, everybody wins", Scott told reporters Friday.

"The money that has been given to school districts is not enough to cover the increases in growth", says Andrea Messina of the Florida School Boards Association.

Scott unsuccessfully asked for $250 million a year ago for incentives, and this year his request was for $85 million to fund the Quick Action Closing Fund. "It's my understanding that with regard to the budget there is a pathway forward for consideration of an agreement that would increase funds for Visit Florida..." said Negron on Friday at the press conference.

Scott said this is something now in review.

Scott in recent weeks has bashed the budget and hinted that the secrecy of the education bill, one of the last bills agreed to by lawmakers as part of final budget negotiations, gave him concern. A budget that while the governor signed off on he's now making lawmakers go back to Tallahasee next week for a pecial session to essentially re-negotiate how your tax dollars will be spent.

Critics say the proposed education funding ramps up spending on charter schools at the expense of public schools.

Lawmakers have yet to complete work to regulate the use of marijuana, which was approved by voters in a constitutional amendment that passed during the November election. "The governor has called us into special session and we will be there and consider any proposals that emerge during that special session", said Negron.
