Charles Barkley drops by Stanley Cup Finals, raves about National Hockey League playoffs

NHL Centennial ambassador Wayne Gretzky, along with former teammate Paul Coffey, were answering questions from the media prior to Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final in Nashville when in swooped an National Basketball Association legend.

He never really can sneak into any place, but he eased his way onto the stage about 16 minutes in, microphone in hand.

"Well, you know, I've just always wondered: Who's your favourite black athlete of all time?" asked Barkley. Former NBAer Charles Barkley, the Round Mound of Rebound, loves the Stanley Cup Final and the Stanley Cup Playoffs in general.

Everybody laughed a little harder. "The best thing about my job is when I'm in work for two straight months like the NHL playoffs, I'm in a room with 20 televisions and I watched pretty much every single hockey game".

"That was quick", Barkley said, laughing. He also tied the modern record shared by Jean Beliveau (1956) and Mike Bossy (1982) for most goals in the Stanley Cup Final, with seven in five games. "The NBA playoffs have not been very good", he said.

Charles Barkley was legendary for his skills on the basketball court, but the former NBA great is also, suprisingly, a huge fan of another sport: hockey!

"They say it's insane, and the playoffs have been incredible", Barkley said.

"We had a love for the game", Gretzky said in a statement. Then when I got to Philadelphia, my favorite hockey player of all time is Ron Hextall. "It's the craziest thing you're ever going to see".

The Oilers emerged from more than 3.6 million votes through interactive digital and mobile programs from April 13 to May 25 as the greatest team of all time. He is great for the game of hockey, and hopefully he continues to be involved in some way after this year's postseason. "He loves the physicality and toughness of the sport".

As Barkley told Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch, all it took for Levy to convince Barkley to draw up another long-term deal with Turner was a couple bottles of expensive tequila, a few bottles of fine wine and a round of golf.
