US opts out of G7 pledge committing to Paris climate accord

In fact, the final text doesn't say the Paris accord is the only tool for tackling climate change.

President Donald Trump announced the U.S. was withdrawing from the Paris accord earlier this month, framing it as a "reassertion of America's sovereignty".

Up next is the G-20 meeting in Germany in July.

On Monday, Trudeau was pressed on his alleged comments by NDP leader Tom Mulcair.

The Prime Minister's office said later in an e-mail that it has asked the magazine for a correction.

Mulcair was not placated by Trudeau's denial, accusing him of being all style and no substance when it comes to climate change.

Cameron Ahmad, a spokesperson in Trudeau's office, called the report "incorrect" and referred to a summary of the phone call with Merkel that the PMO released last week.

Thus far, the article has not been changed.

But the weekly magazine reported that Trudeau and some other leaders rejected German Chancellor Angela Merkel's aggressive approach to isolate Trump over his rambling and mistake-filled June 1 announcement that the us would withdraw from the Paris deal.

McKenna also said that all G7 members except the U.S. - France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union - inked a statement at the meeting that expressed their joint commitment to the "swift and effective implementation of the Paris agreement".

His assessment of the meeting raised eyebrows, as it comes less than two weeks after he and Trump announced their intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, a major environmental agreement negotiated under the Obama administration with almost every country on Earth.

The Trump administration has refused to sign an worldwide declaration committing to action on climate change.

As a result, the United States said it would not join those sections of the report on climate and multilateral development banks.

"(Paris) is not the only mechanism by which environmental stewardship can be demonstrated", added Pruitt, who had left the meeting on Sunday evening to attend Trump's first full cabinet meeting on Monday.

However, Canada's environment minister, Catherine McKenna, said the meeting did the opposite. It says the leaders "reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, combating climate change, strengthening environmental protection, as well as pursuing clean energy and sustainable development". "Symbolically it is important that the U.S. remains in an environmentalist dynamic, even if it wants to maintain a degree of latitude on climate change and prefers a bilateral approach to a multilateral one on that issue".

Many European leaders were shocked by Trump's behavior during the recent G7 summit, his lack of support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and then his announcement about the Paris accord. But in spite of all the made-up hysteria about the Paris climate agreement, the Trump decision shouldn't be all that controversial. "They made it clear that the Paris Agreement is irreversible and its momentum can not be stopped".

The unexpected concession to the climate-doubting president would run counter to recent public statements made by Trudeau's Liberal government as it portrayed itself as a champion of the 2015 global agreement that was signed in Paris to limit the pollution that contributes to climate change.

The agreement is non-binding. Energy ministers failed to agree to a common statement thanks to the US, leaving the Italian presidency to simply publish a chair summary. Brown signed green technology agreements, expanded climate deals and met with President Xi Jinping in what looked like a visit by a foreign head of state.
