Sunderland closing in on Derek McInnes after making formal approach to Aberdeen

Aberdeen have been thrown into turmoil by the impending departure of their manager Derek McInnes to the Sky Bet Championship club Sunderland.

It is thought the Black Cats identified McInnes as their preferred candidate some time ago and the process may now move forward quickly after he returned from holiday.

McInnes has a release clause in his contract, which sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk is worth £1.2million.

Both parties are now said to be in talks to agree a compensation package for the 45-year-old, who has been at Pittodrie since his appointment in March 2013.

Sunderland officials are keen to have David Moyes' successor in position by the end of the week, with McInnes now firmly established as their preferred option.

McInnes has won 112 of his 199 games at Aberdeen but, having finished second in each of the past three seasons, may realistically feel that he can not take the club much closer to Celtic.

He led the club to their first piece of silverware in 19 years when they won the Scottish League Cup in 2014 and the Dons finished each of the previous three seasons in second place in the league. Assuming that this is met, McInnes, who has previously managed St Johnstone and Bristol City, will be allowed to speak about becoming the next manager of Sunderland.

According to a report in the Sunderland Echo, Derek McInnes could take over at the Stadium of Light in the near future.
