APNewsBreak: About 4000 more US troops to go to Afghanistan

The United States - under Republican George W. Bush's presidency - and its allies invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.

"For example, ISIS has established a branch in Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups remain active inside Afghanistan, and the Taliban continue to pose a challenge to the democratically elected government", he added. Recently Nicholson asked for 3,000 to 5,000 more troops to bolster the current levels - 8,400 Americans and 5,000 soldiers from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Mattis also noted that the additional troops could meet shortfalls for air power, logistical support and intelligence support for the Afghan military.

Mattis will be able to set troop levels in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan but the broad strokes for the American military missions there will still be closely coordinated by the administration and other agencies.

"We are not winning in Afghanistan right now", Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

"If that means we have to keep [U.S.] advisers with them a little longer, then 9/11 taught us the cost of not paying attention to this problem".

A report from Politico stated that the United States has approximately 8,400 troops in Afghanistan. A long-term U.S. commitment of more troops and more money with continued internecine warfare in Afghanistan. Mattis' statement was made during a tense exchange with the committee's chairman, John McCain (R-Ariz.).

America's military posture in Afghanistan is part of a regional context in South Asia and to ensure the war-torn country does not become an "ungoverned space" from which the U.S. can be targeted, Defence Secretary James Mattis said today.

The finality of the decision isn't entirely clear. In an effort to prevent a full-out combat mission and to stress the advisory role of the USA military presence, the Obama administration placed very specific limits on the number of troops sent to Iraq. "But I don't think that takes away President Trump's responsibility for that decision". In congressional testimony this week, he said the strategy will take into account regional influences, such as Pakistan's role as a Taliban sanctuary.

"We change the way we fight, we change the regional construct and we change our approach to how we deal with this government", he said.

Testifying before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defence, Mattis said the revised strategy for Afghanistan would be presented to the White House soon.

Mattis signaled his intention to brief lawmakers on a new strategy by mid-July. "All wars come to an end".

As such, Mattis is looking to end the war as soon as possible.

Thanks to the vigilance and skill of the US military and our many allies and partners, horrors on the scale of September 11, 2001, have not been repeated on our shores. Three U.S. soldiers were killed and another was wounded in eastern Afghanistan this weekend in an attack claimed by the Taliban.
