Google's New VR180 Video Format Makes Creating, Enjoying VR Content Easier

Acknowledging that every online user is not equipped enough to watch 360-degree videos, Google-owned YouTube has launched a new format for content creators. Named as VR180 it hopes to give a cinematic VR format that will be nearly as accessible as YouTube videos. Creators will eventually be able to edit their videos with tools like Adobe Premiere Pro.

Google realized that filming 360-degree videos isn't an easy task for most content creators.

The limited field of view does have its advantages, such as providing viewers with a sharper 4K resolution directly in front of them, smaller file sizes, and less concern over stitching and parallax issues. The video sharing platform also announced some changes to how they handle multiple video formats. While it will not be as powerful as the 360-degree video, it will definitely be better than normal videos. Google says they are working with camera manufacturers like LG, Yi and Lenovo to build new VR180 cameras which will cost "as little as a couple hundred dollars". Z CAM will be one of YouTube's first partners for this.

In addition to the main VR180 news, YouTube also announced various updates for its mobile and desktop apps, YouTube TV and more. You can find a number of VR180 videos already available on YouTube. Google has always been good at bells and whistles, and these new features are likely to further draw eyeballs to YouTube's mobile platform. A new sharing feature that is currently being tested in front of a limited YouTube audience in Canada is now going to roll out to the United States and Latin America.

Pick a video, then share it with the phone contacts on your device with a message.

Among them: "the new minimum" for success on YouTube is now 2-3 videos per week, and that the "sweet spot for video length" is 7-16 minutes. Creators can also apply to borrow one from the company's studios, called YouTube Spaces, which are located in major cities, according to The Verge. The PSVR YouTube app was just launched in January.
