Michael Bond - creator of Horsham charity's Paddington mascot - dies

Paddington Bear creator Michael Bond is dead at age 91, publisher HarperCollins announced Wednesday. The famed author passed away at his home on Tuesday (27 June) following a short illness, his publisher Harper Collins confirmed in a statement.

Bond was 30 when he began dreaming up the world of Paddington, eventually enlisting illustrator Fred Banbery for the picture books, which have sold more than 30 million copies and have been translated into at least 40 languages. The character was adopted by the Brown family, who named him after Paddington Station where they found him. His most recent Paddington story was published in April this year. "He called it Paddington because they were living near Paddington Station at the time", the BBC writes.

He was working as a BBC cameraman when he created his most famous character.

6 " Bears like Paddington are very rare. Reflecting on the bear's popularity, Bond told Pauli that "Paddington is eternally optimistic and always comes back for more, no matter how many times his hopes are dashed".

The author gave the film Paddington his blessing because, while the bear has appeared on stage and television over the years, a movie was "the one thing Paddington hadn't done".

But that 1958 book was "A Bear Called Paddington", about a bear from deepest, "darkest Peru", sent to the U.K.by his aunt Lucy. I didn't intend to write a book at all. "On meeting him I realised he was #Paddington". Bond was born in Newbury and raised in Reading.

Michael was inspired to write the cute stories about the stuffed animal just for fun and never meant to actually have them published.

The stop motion animated series followed a mixture of fantastical characters who inhabited the garden wall of a country estate. Survivors include his wife, Susan Rogers, whom he married in 1981; a daughter from his first marriage, Karen Jankel; a son from another relationship, Anthony Barwell; and four grandchildren. He said that, throughout his life, he received letters from readers who unburdened themselves to him about the solace Paddington had brought in moments of trial.
