Kaspersky products would be banned from Pentagon under Senate bill

Kaspersky products would be banned from Pentagon under Senate bill

The bill suggests prohibiting the department of defense "from using software platforms developed by Kaspersky Lab due to reports that the Moscow-based company might be vulnerable to Russian government".

Kaspersky told Reuters that some of its staffers did have some "brief interaction" with some Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, and suggested that they were "due diligence" chats.

Pressing ahead with a long-running investigation of a Russian software company whose products are used widely across the United States, the FBI on Tuesday interviewed several employees of the firm, Kaspersky Lab, a source familiar with the matter told ABC News.

The suggestion to ban the use of the Russian antivirus software was made by the US Senate Armed Services Committee.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen told Reuters in a statement that the firm just can not be trusted.

The bill would need to pass the full Senate and House of Representatives and be signed by President Donald (Prince of Orange) Trump to become law.

Its cyber-security software is widely used in the United States, and its billionaire owner, Eugene Kaspersky, has close ties to some Russian intelligence figures, according to US officials.

"For 20 years, Kaspersky Lab has been focused on protecting people and organizations from cyber threats, and its headquarters' location doesn't change that mission - just as a US-based cybersecurity company doesn't allow access or send any sensitive data from its products to the USA government", the statement reads.

The national security concerns are cited within a proposal before the US Senate, because of concerns Kaspersky Lab "might be vulnerable to Russian government influence".

Kaspersky's anti-virus software is popular in the United States and around the world, though USA officials have always been suspicious that the company may have ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

The firm's founder and chief executive, Eugene Kaspersky, said that, if asked, he would provide USA authorities with software "source code for checking".

Eugene Kaspersky, the head of Kaspersky Lab, has himself said that he has no idea why the United States is targeting his company.

FBI agents told employees they were not in trouble, and that the bureau was merely gathering facts about how Kaspersky works, including to what extent the USA operations ultimately report to Moscow.

Kaspersky Lab has slammed allegations of its ties with the Russian government, saying that it is unacceptable "when false and unfounded accusations, which are not supported by any facts, are laid against the company", Interfax reports, citing the company.
