Kano Residents Mourn Maitama-Sule

The State Commissioner for Information, Mallam Mohammed Garba, who confirmed the death in a statement, said he died in Cairo during a protracted illness.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State says the country will miss the wise counsel of the late Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule who passed on Monday in Cairo, Egypt.

One-time Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Federal Minister in the first republic, Dr. Maitama Sule, according to the Acting President, is best remembered on the global scene, as one of our country's foremost envoys whose clarity of voice and vision contributed significantly to the high esteem and respect Nigeria earned at the United Nations.

"Danmasanin Kano was a rare statesman and an orator who can move mountains with words".

The Commissioner announced that the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has declared Tuesday a work-free day in the state to mourn the death of the elder statesman.

He was appointed Nigeria's representative to the United Nations in September 1979.

Governor Yari prayed to almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest.

He was said to have died in an hospital while undergoing treatment.

The deceased was widely acclaimed for his oratory prowess which endeared him to many Nigerians and politicians across board.

He was a presidential candidate in 1979 under the aegis of the National Party of Nigeria, but he lost the election to Shehu Shagari - the country's sixth president.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Sule became Minister of Mines and Power in 1954 at the age of 29.

His remains will be flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday, family sources told PREMIUM TIMES earlier.
