U.S. warplanes fly over disputed S China Sea

Asserting the right to treat the disputed waterway as global waters rather than Chinese territorial waters, two supersonic B-1B Lancers dispatched from Guam conducted a flyover mission in the South China Sea, the Air Force revealed Friday, according to Reuters.

The U.S. Air Force said in a statement the two B-1B Lancers made the flight from after training with Japanese jet fighters in the East China Sea, according to Reuters.

Following the joint operation, the US B-1 bombers then flew over the South China Sea "to exercise the rights of freedom of navigation" before returning to Anderson Air Force Base in Guam.

"Flying and training at night with our allies in a safe, effective manner is an important capability shared between the United States and Japan", said Maj.

Tokyo has reported several instances of Chinese coast guard ships entering Japan-claimed waters near the Senkaku Islands.

On Tuesday, July 4th, North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that some analysts believe may be able to reach Alaska.

"But China resolutely opposes individual countries using the banner of freedom of navigation and overflight to flaunt military force and harm China's sovereignty and security", Geng said.

"China has always respected and supported other countries' freedom of navigation of overflight in accordance with global law", he added.

The operation allowed the allies to improve tactical skills and build "bilateral confidence and strong working relationships", said the Air Force.

China claims sovereignty over all of South China Sea.

In a statement, the Defence Ministry said China always maintained its vigilance and "effectively monitors relevant countries' military activities next to China".

Beijing has long laid claim over the waterway, disputing other countries like Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam, and building up military infrastructure to solidify its presence.
